Methodology for Calculation:
- Our data is derived in conjunction with the Blue Sky Model (https://blueskymodel.org), the EPA, and the Federal Highway Administration, Forbes and other research.
- Our current cost per ton of CO2 is $40. Obama administration set it at $37 but most experts conclude it is much higher than that.
- Plane Travel: We use 65 MPG per seat, with the average number of occupied seats on airlines currently being at 81.9%.
- There is no way to be 100% accurate and in some cases we made reasonable assumptions in our calculations.
Forbes reports that, worldwide, the average load factor for commercial airliners has reached 81.9 per cent in 2018, meaning more than eight of every 10 seats on the average flight is full. That’s up from an average of 75.2 per cent in 2005.
