Can chocolate cause indigestion?
Chocolate has been included in part of the foods that cause acid reflux, a condition where there is a backward flow of acid into the esophagus (throat). Usually, this causes rather unpleasant heartburn. So, though not directly, chocolate (whether dark or milky) may result in indigestion; and it makes a list for foods not to be consumed for persons with acid reflux.
Heartburn is caused by the backwash of stomach acid into the oesophagus which is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
Although, chocolate is known as comfort food because it contains high amounts of serotonin which helps to regulate our moods and emotions. According to some research, it also causes indigestion as the serotonin in the chocolate has the power to relax the lower oesophagal sphincter that normally helps in preventing the reflux of acid into the oesophagus. This can then leads to heartburn.
