Heartburn is a common problem of almost everybody in the world. This disease can reduce the quality of life of an individual as it can cause damage to the oesophagus and can also increase the risk of cancer.

Most of us are leading hectic lives, and this takes a toll on our health. One of the first things that is affected by this chaos is our nutrition. So many of us find ourselves increasingly less able to make the soundest choices when it comes to deciding what foods we eat and when. It is common, even normal, to eat foods that are sweeter, greasier, and overall less healthy. Throw in the constant consumption of irritants such as coffee and alcohol and it comes as no surprise that the result of all this is progressively worsening heartburn.

This is serious business, and much more than a mere nuisance, because heartburn has been repeatedly linked to the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, which itself has been connected to various types of cancer such as adenocarcinoma.

The use of traditional medicines against heartburn, especially proton pump inhibitors, can often generate adverse side effects after prolonged use. If you use these medicines regularly, you shouldn’t be surprised if you experience recurring abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea or constipation. Proton pump Inhibitors have also been linked to increased risk of suffering a myocardial infarction, dementia, stroke, and various liver disorders.

Furthermore, while these products relieve symptoms, they do not prevent the problem.

For these reasons, the best way to treat heartburn and ease its symptoms is to enact some meaningful dietary changes.

For example:

Eat more licorice. Natural licorice improves the secretion of mucins, a natural gel-like substance that protects the lining of your stomach from the increased acidity caused by heartburn.

Eat fresh ginger every day. Ginger is one of the oldest known remedies for heartburn (it is also fantastic to combat nausea and motion sickness). Ginger can easily be added to many dishes, consumed raw in thin slivers, or made into teas and infusions.

Drink natural pear juice. Pears, which are slightly acidic, are rich in vitamins A, B, and C, as well as mineral salts such as sodium, potassium, iron, and calcium, which help to dilute stomach acid and greatly relieve the discomfort and sensation of burning caused by heartburn.
