What are the best foods to eat during kemo?

The many physical and psychological symptoms experienced by cancer patients, those that are caused by the disease and those produced by treatment methods, have a tendency to alter nutrition significantly. For this reason, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment must prioritize their diet in the hopes of maintaining an appropriate weight and optimizing their immune system.

So, what foods should a patient consume during chemotherapy?

  • Low-fat white cheeses such as ricotta and cottage, which are easy to digest. (However, if you are lactose intolerant reduce the amount or eliminate it)
  • Fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and currants, which are rich in flavonoids
  • Whole-grain bread and pasta, which contain high quantities of fiber, B vitamins, and essential amino acids
  • Green tea, which is packed with antioxidants
  • Assorted leafy greens such as kale, spinach, turnip greens, arugula, and mustard greens, as these actively inhibit carcinogenic enzymes

The idea is to consume a bit of everything, suitably varying the food, to concentrate in each meal as many nutrient-rich ingredients as possible.

Going through chemotherapy can be a difficult time for many people. The effects it can have and the symptoms one must endure is dependent on the person and their body. Therefore, in order to stay as healthy as one can and to reduce any negative reactions the treatment may cause, there are some specific foods that may be beneficial to have in an individual’s diet during chemotherapy.

Due to the drugs used, many people suffer from side effects which can make eating and maintaining a healthy weight difficult. One major suggestion is eating smaller portions, especially on the day of a patient’s chemotherapy. Some of the foods suggested include plain yogurt, cottage cheese, or cereal with milk. Snacks such as fresh fruit (bananas, apples, etc.) and crackers are important to have as well. Most foods that are rich in nutrients and vitamins are a positive addition to a person’s diet.

The key to knowing one’s body and the way one may react to certain foods is extremely important. It is up to the individual to be aware of the foods that work for them and to also know which ones to stay away from. High acidic drinks, greasy, or spicy foods are three of the most important things to avoid during chemotherapy.
